Stone carvings at Dalmeny Kirk
A close look at carved stone can raise better questions than a confident guess about what every figure means.
Begin at the south doorway
The HES description records a round-arched entrance with Romanesque columns and carved arch stones. Its account identifies zodiacal and bestiary figures, projecting heads and an Agnus Dei motif. Elsewhere it records carved capitals and corbels. Use the record’s terminology as a research starting point, not as a substitute for checking the particular feature.
A gap in the old site
The surviving July 2015 Stone Carvings page was marked as unfinished. This guide is new writing; it does not claim to reproduce a lost illustrated article or a former author’s interpretation.
Compare one detail at a time
- Note where the detail sits: doorway, capital, arch stone or corbel.
- Find a clear dated image or drawing in the heritage record.
- Describe what you can see before attaching a symbolic interpretation.
- Keep uncertainty visible where weathering or the image prevents a clear reading.
Continue with the reading tour for the relationship between details and the building as a whole.
