Dalmeny Kirk: history in layers

Independent guide · Updated 2 October 2026

A building’s history is easier to understand when its fabric, records and remembered stories are read together.

Choose a starting point

  • History introduction: the kirk’s architectural setting and the sources behind the former site.
  • Early days: what the records establish about the medieval core.
  • Stone carvings: looking carefully at the doorway and carved details.
  • Graveyard: inscriptions, monuments and differences between accounts.
  • A reading tour: a sequence for exploring the evidence.

Read the sources in context

The former site’s history menu offered more subjects than every surviving capture contained. Some pages were unfinished. These new notes therefore distinguish a preserved description from material that needs another source.

Historic Environment Scotland’s place record provides photographs, references and descriptive accounts. For current access to the building, use the visiting and contact guide; a historical account does not guarantee opening times.
